Barbados 2001, part 5

The ultimate highlight...

... was the hatching of baby Hawksbill turtles right in front of the dive base Hightide Watersports. Something like this you really don't see every day! The point of time was very unusual as well, since turtles normally use to hatch at night. These were digging out themselves at about 9:15 in the morning. Probably some people stepped on the nest - unknowingly - and the pressure of their footprints was forwarded by the sand to the eggs and that caused them to start their way into real life ahead of time.

It was highly interesting to see how these little buggers were fighting their way to reach the sea. In either case each of them managed it to get into the water. This luck is not with all of the turtles worldwide, because in some areas many of them get eaten by big birds before they can reach the water. Here, however everything went well.

Baby Hawksbills The first ones of the nest are digging themselves out. A tough job to do!
Baby Hawksbills It is a hard work to get out of the hole.
Baby Hawksbills Finally, the happening appeared to be a race.
Baby Hawksbills

Ooops! The youngsters are pretty blind and helpless. That's why they trap into wholes like footprints, because they are unable to see them. But after a short break they resume and are proceeding on their way to the water.

Baby Hawksbills This one here seems to become the winner... Number 1.
Baby Hawksbills A few steps only are to go...
Baby Hawksbills

Waterborn!

Number 1 did it!

Baby Hawksbills And that's what they look like from the UW-perspective. This one here is gasping for air. The small lungs they have and the hard work that they have done before is forcing them to breathe frequently.
